A Refined Wedding on Figure Eight Island

There’s a certain kind of quiet that exists on Figure Eight Island. If you've never been, I highly recommend planning a getaway.

It’s not empty or boring, but it’s intentional. The kind of peaceful that comes from space, from privacy, from a place that doesn’t need to prove itself. And that energy carries into everything that happens there, including the weddings.

I was honored when Mason and Banks reached out to me about capturing their Figure Eight Island wedding day photography. They're a wonderful couple and such a joy to work with, and I was, of course, excited to visit a new place.

Their wedding day felt like everything the island represents: considered, layered, and deeply personal. Not overdone or performative. Just thoughtful in all the ways that matter.

As a luxury wedding photographer, these are the weddings I’m most drawn to - the ones where the details don’t compete for attention, but instead work together to create a feeling you can’t quite put into words.

Why Figure Eight Island Is One of the Most Exclusive Wedding Destinations on the East Coast

Tucked just north of Wilmington, Figure Eight Island is one of the most private and sought-after coastal destinations in North Carolina. Unlike many beach towns along the East Coast, it remains residential and gated, offering a level of exclusivity that’s increasingly rare.

For couples planning a luxury coastal wedding in North Carolina, it offers something that goes beyond just a beautiful backdrop.

  • Expansive private homes instead of traditional venues

  • Uninterrupted ocean views and wide stretches of beach

  • A sense of ease and privacy that allows the weekend to unfold naturally

There’s no rush here. No crowded timelines or over-scheduled moments. And there's plenty of space to gather, celebrate, and be fully present.

And from a photography perspective, that space dictates everything.

A Wedding Designed with Intention and Restraint

This wedding embraced what I often think of as “quiet luxury.”

The design leaned into a perfect island palette—creamy whites, natural textures, pale greens pulled from the surrounding landscape. Nothing felt forced. Every detail felt like it belonged, and it all contributed to the overall aesthetic and feel.

Florals were organic and textural rather than overly structured. The tablescape was layered but never overwhelming. One of my favorite details is a footed rattan bowl with a heap of limes inside. So different yet so inviting!

This is something I always encourage my clients to consider when planning a luxury wedding: not just what will look beautiful in the moment, but what will last.

Because photography has a way of revealing what was intentional and what wasn’t.

The Role of Editorial Wedding Photography

Weddings along the coast, especially in places like Figure Eight Island, come with their own set of challenges and opportunities.

The light shifts quickly. The wind is unpredictable. The environment is constantly moving.

And yet, that’s exactly what makes it so compelling.

My approach to editorial wedding photography is rooted in observation first. Instead of over-directing or forcing moments, I’m looking for the in-between - the way a veil moves in the wind, the way light reflects off the water just before sunset, the way people naturally settle into a space when they feel at ease.

On this day, that meant leaning into:

  • Soft, diffused afternoon light along the coastline

  • Movement-driven portraits that felt natural, not posed

  • Framing that highlighted both the couple and the environment

The goal is never just to document what something looked like, but to capture how it felt to be there.

A Weekend Experience, Not Just a Wedding Day

One of the defining characteristics of a Figure Eight Island wedding is that it rarely exists as just a single day.

With guests staying in nearby homes, the celebration naturally extends into a full weekend experience: welcome dinners, slow mornings, beach walks, and long conversations that carry from one gathering to the next.

That rhythm allows for something different photographically as well.

There’s less pressure to capture everything in a tight window, and more opportunity to document the full story as it unfolds.

Some of the most meaningful images from this weekend weren’t from the ceremony itself, but from the more subtle moments surrounding it. The in-between spaces where people were simply enjoying where they were.

Why Coastal North Carolina Weddings Continue to Stand Out

There’s no shortage of beautiful wedding destinations, but coastal North Carolina weddings offer something that feels increasingly rare: balance.

They’re elevated without being inaccessible. Refined without feeling rigid.

Places like Figure Eight Island, Bald Head Island, and the Outer Banks allow couples to create experiences that feel both luxurious and grounded. Where design and environment work together instead of competing.

For couples considering a luxury beach wedding on the East Coast, this region offers a unique combination of:

  • Natural beauty that doesn’t need heavy styling

  • Privacy and exclusivity without the formality of traditional venues

  • A slower pace that allows the weekend to feel intentional rather than rushed

Final Thoughts

Every wedding has its own energy. Some are bold and expressive. Others are layered and intricate. And then there are weddings like this one on Figure Eight Island: quietly confident, deeply intentional, and effortlessly refined.

Those are the ones that tend to stay with you. Not because they demanded attention, but because they didn’t have to.
